Mock drafts are over. Prospect rankings can be stopped. The first pick in the 2023 NHL Draft is on the books for the Flyers and it’s Matvei Michkov. That’s how Matvei Michkov is when the Arizona Coyotes went overboard and selected Dmitri Simashev sixth overall.
Matvei Michkov turned 18 on December 9, 2022. He is 5’10 and weighs 148bs. This is a bit of a raw build for a pro hockey player and gives him some room if he wants to add strength this summer. Michkov, is a native of Perm, Russia, and I’m sure he started playing this sport at the age of 3-5.
Now more about the Michkov player. The Flyers ended up getting the guy they wanted all along. David Reinbacher and Dmitri Simashev were caught, leaving Michkov and others hanging in the balance. David Reinbacher was always going to the Arizona Coyotes, but the Montreal Canadiens took him. Michkov was a guy the Flyers wanted and he had eyes. They loved his shot, hands, size and skating. Plus, they love what he can become, as the Flyers are now targeting shooters first in recent drafts. Tyson Foerster’s best skill is his shot. Samu Tuomaala, even though he was a second round pick in 2021, is a guy who can skate and shoot the puck. Cutter Gauthier can shoot the puck with the best of them. Now add Michkov to that list, a pivotal player.
“We know that he has a contract for 3 more seasons. We felt he was the talent we couldn’t pass up. We met him a couple of times. He loved the Flyers and you can tell he wanted to be a Flyer.” – declared Danny Briere after the selection
Michkov is ideal for the Flyers. Scored nine goals and 11 assists with HK Sochi on loan to the KHL in 27 games in 2022-23. He has a no-switch motor, plays well in the defensive zone and is very competitive. That sets him apart from other prospects, and he’s an attractive player for any organization willing to take a chance on him.

Flyers general manager Danny Briere, I’m sure, loves Michkov’s awareness, and he’s a risk coming to North America that the Flyers could wait for. This is valuable for a rebuilding team like the Flyers, as this team will look very different over the next few years.
Mitchkov’s overall outlook is a forward whose best skill will be shooting the puck. He is expected to be in attendance at the Flyers’ development camp next week in Voorhees, NJ, and we expect him to come to North America in three years.
“I’m happy to be Flyers, unreal moment.” – Matvei Michkov
