In his second historic sentence in a year, the Washington Post reports that the US Supreme Court has ruled that race cannot be used in college admissions, which will not only change the direction America’s universities and colleges take on race and admissions, but which may also affect decades of historical cases related to the problem.
The breakdown of the decision has not yet been made public, but with six conservative justices on the Court, it is not unimaginable to believe how this decision was made.
The ruling involved a self-styled Harvard University group Students for fair admissionwhich accused the school of holding Asian-American students to a higher educational standard than African-American or Hispanic students.
The conservative-leaning superior court aL also rules in favor of the same group that accused the University of North Carolina of discriminating against white and Asian-American applicants by favoring the admission of black, Hispanic and Native American students.
In response to the Supreme Court decision of tear down the use of affirmative action in admissions policies, Democrats for Education Reform DC (DFER DC) released the following statement:
“By eliminating equitable access to our nation’s higher education system, today’s majority conservative Supreme Court ruled against black and brown students’ access to the American Dream,” said DFER Executive Director Jessica Giles d.c. “This ruling erases decades of progress, an especially troubling reality given that our higher education system continues to maintain systemic and racist barriers to entry that keep the doors of opportunity closed to black and brown students.”
