The Kiel Fire Department responded to a call about a smoke-filled Fremont Street apartment at 8:30 a.m. Monday, July 3rd.
According to a press release, KFD Public Information Officer Kyle Preissner reported that upon the arrival of Engine 4, an occupant of the building stated that the fire was out, but there was still heavy smoke in the apartment
Personnel proceeded to the second floor where it was confirmed that the fire was extinguished. Crews remained at the scene for 90 minutes performing rescue, inspection and ventilation operations.
Preissner also reported that there is currently no damage estimate. An unattended candle is believed to be the cause of the fire. One occupant was evaluated by emergency medical personnel and released at the scene.
The Kiel Fire and Ambulance Department was assisted by the Kiel Police Department.
A public safety message from the KFD was included in the press release, reminding everyone of the importance of installing working smoke detectors and never leaving lit candles unattended.
