Alabama TV reporter Valerie Bell creates breaking news at alleged crime scene – Deadline

There is an axiom in the news business that a reporter should never make the story about them. Valerie Bell, a television reporter for ABC affiliate WBMA in Birmingham, Ala., broke that rule recently, but it can be forgiven. With the help of the local police, she was lured into a marriage proposal arranged by her fiance, Blake Bjornson.

A five-minute clip Bell posted on Instagram on July 1 shows Bell investigating an alleged report of a domestic violence incident near a lake.

As he begins to take notes, the police officer he is talking to asks him to turn around. There was her fiance holding a ring box.

“Here I was, thinking I was going to get breaking news,” Bell posted. “But little did he know, it was all part of a massive collaborative plan to pull off a very big surprise.”

The proposal was short and sweet.

“I’m just trying to process what just happened. Oh my god,” Bell said in the video as he realizes what’s happening. “I thought there were kids in the water. This is so bad.”

Spoiler alert: He said, “Yes.”

How did it all go… đź’Ť Here I was, thinking I was on breaking news @abc3340, but little did he know, it was all part of a massive collaborative plan to pull off a surprise. I can’t wait to spend eternity with you. I am the luckiest girl. #BecomingBjornson pic.twitter.com/Md0P5yShxx
