SHINGOBEE BAY, Minnesota — Two bald eagles may be resuming their apparent long-running feud after quick-thinking deputies helped separate the feuding pair that had become entangled in a Minnesota lake.

Cass County Deputies John Murray and Todd Wolter were at Leech Lake on Monday when they found two adult eagles struggling in the water, attached by their wings and talons.

“We were just patrolling the lake and we saw them fall into the water,” Wolter said. Deputies used a pole to disconnect the massive, angry birds. Finally, they separated and went to the shore.

“They rested for a few minutes and then went up a hill,” Murray said. “I guess when they dried, they took off.”

Sheriff Bryan Welk said people who live near the lake have reported seeing the same two eagles fighting in the air over a nest several times. Welk said it’s common for eagles to become territorial, but much less common for them to bond with each other.
