WORCESTER, Mass. – The gunman in Worcester is in police custody Friday night after shooting two family members and then firing at officers during a 13-hour standoff.
The family members managed to escape and were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. None of the responding officers were hit, according to investigators.
Police were called to a home on Colby Avenue just before 9 a.m. Friday.
Lt. Sean Murtha said police believe a 21-year-old man shot his two family members, a man and a woman. There was no immediate word on how they were related to the suspect.
When officers tried to arrest the man, he opened fire on them and ran back into the house, luckily not hitting any of them, according to Murtha.
After a days-long standoff, police sent a K9 into the home forcing the suspect out and officers were able to apprehend the shooter shortly before 9:45 p.m.
Hostage negotiators and a mental health doctor were brought to the scene as officers worked to make contact with the suspected shooter.
The neighborhood was closed to the public and police asked everyone to avoid the area. Murtha said Worcester’s reverse 911 system was used to contact residents in the area.
The incident remains under investigation.
