GILMANTON, NH – Three people have died, including a Boy Scout who died in a boating accident and a 41-year-old woman from Beverly, Mass., who drowned after three separate incidents in New Hampshire waters on Friday, officials said the state police.
The Marine Patrol and State Police responded to calls in Gilmanton, Manchester and Madison between 2:15 and 8:45 p.m. Friday, with at least nine agencies assisting.
At approximately 2:15 p.m., New Hampshire 911 received a call for a boating accident on Manning Lake in Gilmanton, where a child was injured while in a boat, state police said.
The boy, whose age and hometown were not released, was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said. The boy had been among a group of out-of-state campers who were in New Hampshire at Boy Scout camp the week he died.
During the fatal boating accident in Gilmanton, the Marine Patrol received another call about a body found in the Piscataquog River in Manchester, near the Goffstown border, state police said.
Boaters called Manchester police after finding the body, later identified as Shawn Barton, 40, of an unknown address at this time, state police said. The Marine Patrol along with Troop B troopers and the Major Crimes Unit responded to investigate. An investigation is underway to determine Barton’s cause of death.
Then, around 8:45 p.m., a third call came in for a possible drowning at Middle Pea Porridge Pond in Madison, for a female swimmer who had not returned to her family after being in the water in front of his rental property, state police. said
Investigators said Amy Posocco, 41, of Beverly, Mass., had been swimming with a group of family members when she was unable to make it back to shore. The family and neighbors began an immediate search but were unsuccessful.
A dive team of first responders from Ossipee helped locate Posocco about 90 feet from shore. An investigation into his death is ongoing. While the immediate cause of death was not known Saturday, state police said they believe Posocco’s death was accidental.
“The New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol would like to extend our condolences to the families of the three victims,” state police said in a statement Saturday.
State police also thanked the following agencies for their assistance at the scenes of the three fatalities: New Hampshire State Police – Troop B, Troop E and Major Crimes Unit, New Hampshire Fish and Game, Gilmanton Police, Fire and Gilmanton Rescue, Alton Ambulance, Manchester Police and Fire, Ossipee Fire and Rescue and the New Hampshire Medical Examiner’s Office.
