Meta launched Threads this week which is its answer to Twitter and in many ways both platforms want to host digital city squares. However, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri is clarifying things and saying that the social network will not push topics about politics and hard news.
In recent years, Meta has taken a turn to push politics and hard news on its social media, which was noted because Twitter has embraced and encouraged political conversation.
“The goal is not to replace Twitter,” Mosseri shared on Threads. “The goal is to create a public square for Instagram communities that never adopted Twitter and for communities on Twitter (and other platforms) that are interested in a less angry place for conversations, but not everything Twitter”.
Mosseri acknowledges that politics and hard news will inevitably appear on the platform “but we won’t do anything to encourage those verticals.”

Another user pointed out that if Threads wants to be a “public square” it would be counterproductive to demote that content, to which Mosseri responded: “We’re not going to discourage or demote news or politics, we’re just not going to court them like we’ve done in the past.”
Mosseri said they don’t want to repeat the mistakes Facebook made in the past by being “too quick to promise too much” to the media industry.
The head of Instagram noted that “politics and hard news are important,” but “from a platform perspective, any incremental engagement or revenue they might generate is not worth the scrutiny, the negativity (let’s sincere) or the integrity risks involved. them.”
Mosseri continued, “There are more than enough amazing communities — sports, music, fashion, beauty, entertainment, etc. — to make a vibrant platform without needing to get into politics or hard news.”
Meta claims to have already surpassed 70 million users on Threads. Registration is easy as only an Instagram account is required and users are automatically registered on the new platform.
