GRESHAM, Ore. (KPTV) – A hospital security guard was killed in a shooting at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital on Saturday, and the suspect was shot and killed by police in Gresham, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

The Portland Police Bureau said shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday it responded to a shooting at the hospital on Northwest 22nd Avenue. Officers entered the hospital and attempted to locate the suspect and possible victims. At 2pm on Saturday, a spokesman said at a press conference that there were “one or more” victims.

The suspect was released from the hospital, so police set up a perimeter around the neighborhood. They then learned the suspect may have gone to the Fred Meyer store at 100 Northwest 20th Place.

Numerous officers secured the perimeter, evacuated employees and customers, and began searching the store. The suspect was not found.

The injured security guard was taken to a Level 1 trauma center, where he died despite additional life-saving treatment efforts. No patients were injured.

On their website, Legacy Good Samaritan identified the security guard as Bobby Smallwood. They also said a second member of staff had been injured but was expected to recover.

“Words cannot express the deep pain we are experiencing,” said Kathryn Correia, president and CEO of Legacy Health. “We offer our unwavering support to Bobby’s loved ones, our patients in our care, the staff at Legacy Good Samaritan and all of our employees and providers who are suffering today.”

Meanwhile, police determined the suspect was in a vehicle, which they were able to pull over near Northeast 181st Avenue and Northeast Everett Street in Gresham. During the stop, police fired shots that ended with the suspect found dead.

The hospital shelter was lifted around 4:15 p.m
