BATON ROUGE – Parents, teachers and protesters were on hand for a discussion on the current state of schools in Louisiana with Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley, hosted by Moms for Liberty.
The conservative political organization was founded in 2021 by two Florida school board members who opposed the COVID-19 restrictions. Since then, the group has been at the center of controversial views on classroom censorship, gender identity, and critical race theory.
Dr. Brumley spoke about the curriculum, changes being made in the classroom and ways to move Louisiana education forward. When the room had a chance to ask questions, they asked Dr. Brumley on discussing gender identity in classrooms.
“I certainly don’t think that school teachers should be teaching any kind of gender ideologies to students. That’s something their parents do, not the school system,” Brumley said at the podium.
It was the only controversial question of the night. People protesting at the meeting confronted members of Moms for Liberty, accusing them of censoring their questions.
“So you specifically chose certain questions, right?” A protester told a member of Moms for Liberty.
WBRZ spoke with a member of Moms for Liberty who says they don’t want to be controversial and divisive. He says they welcome anyone who wants to protect the rights of parents in public classrooms.
“It’s very sad when we’re just a parents’ rights organization that wants to bridge that gap and help parents learn more about education like we did here tonight, listening to the state superintendent. We’re not a hate group, we like to say we’re joyful warriors and we care about kids,” said member Emily Chenevert.
