EAST ORANGE, New Jersey (WABC) — A brief police chase ended in a fiery crash in East Orange Tuesday morning.
The crash happened just before 6 a.m. at Springdale and Midland avenues.
NewsCopter 7 video of the scene showed an East Orange police patrol car and a gray 2011 BMW sedan that had collided at the intersection.
Both vehicles sustained serious damage. Smoke came from the BMW engine. Firefighters went to the scene to control the situation.
The officer in the patrol vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to University Hospital in Newark to be checked out.
Three suspects in the vehicle fled the scene of the accident on foot. No arrests were immediately made.
An East Orange police spokesman told Eyewitness News the chase started in Livingston and was picked up by Newark police before ending in East Orange.
It is not clear why the BMW was being chased.
Police chases have become increasingly common in Essex County amid a rise in luxury car thefts.
