Friday felt like summer in North Texas as temperatures reached the mid-90s.

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth recorded a temperature of 96 degrees Friday afternoon at DFW International Airport, breaking the previous record of May 5 set in 1984.

A weather service meteorologist confirmed the record was broken at about 4:01 p.m., about an hour after the weather service announced the record had been tied.

Meanwhile, in North Texas, temperatures reached 100 degrees the first time in the region this year, according to the weather service. The triple-digit temperature was recorded Friday afternoon at Mineral Wells Regional Airport, about 50 miles west of Fort Worth.

Despite the unseasonably warm day, normal and even near-normal temperatures should return within the next two weeks, according to weather service meteorologist Monique Sellers.

Vendors also said they were expecting rain and storms next week. He called May “a very interesting time” in North Texas as temperatures and humidity rise, setting the stage for storms.
