WARREN – A Trumbull County judge granted a request to reinstate a pretrial hearing for a Salem woman accused of assaulting a behavioral health worker in Liberty after her attorney entered a not guilty plea by reason of insanity

Representing Kristen Kuhns’ attorney, Carlo A. Ciccone, the request was made to Judge Andrew D. Logan by attorney Alexander Keane. The judge agreed to allow time to review the newly filed motion.

As he appeared in court Tuesday, Kuhns faces charges of second-degree assault, a felony, in an episode that left a behavioral health worker needing surgery for injuries sustained in the December assault of 2022.

A police report states that Kuhns was upset about being admitted to Generations Behavioral Health’s adult diagnostic unit on Colonial Drive. He is accused of sweeping the victim’s right leg and then stepping on his right knee, which broke his shin bone just below the knee.

The 52-year-old employee of the facility was taken to an area hospital where he underwent surgery. Girard Municipal Court later issued a warrant for Kuhns’ arrest, charging her with felonious assault.

His next court appearance will be before Logan on May 16.
