Norfolk Southern train derails at New Castle – WPXI

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – A Norfolk Southern train has derailed in western Pennsylvania.

Channel 11 News is on the scene of the derailment near Montgomery Avenue in New Castle, Lawrence County. It happened around 11.30pm on Wednesday.

The Lawrence County Department of Public Safety says most first responders are clearing the scene and the only “hazardous material” car that derailed was carrying paraffin wax.

Norfolk Southern sent the following statement to Channel 11 just before 5:30 a.m.:

“At 11:57 PM Wednesday evening, nine cars derailed outside of New Castle, PA. No hazardous materials were involved and no injuries were reported. Our crews responded immediately and are actively working the scene.” .

Norfolk Southern’s statement says the train derailed shortly before midnight, but Channel 11 was first alerted to the derailment around 11:23 p.m.
