A 67-year-old man died Saturday evening after being hit by a car while trying to cross US-19 in Pasco County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Less than an hour later, troopers said another man was struck and killed while walking on US 92 in Hillsborough County.
The Pasco crash happened around 9:45 p.m. The agency said a 52-year-old Port Richey woman was driving south on US-19 north of Edna Avenue in Hudson in an SUV. The 67-year-old pedestrian, also from Port Richey, was trying to cross the freeway when the woman hit him. The man died at the scene while the female driver and her passenger were not injured.
The second victim died while walking onto US 92 from the G Five Feed & Outdoor parking lot in Plant City, according to the highway patrol. The car that hit him was driven by a 20-year-old Plant City man who was traveling westbound with a 22-year-old woman and two teenagers, ages 15 and 17. None were injured.
Tampa Bay ranks among the nation’s worst metro areas for pedestrian fatalities. Late last year, the urban development advocacy group Smart Growth America published a report which analyzed pedestrian fatality data. He ranked the Tampa-St. Pete-Clearwater area as the fourth most dangerous place to walk in the nation.
