BOSTON – The desperate mother of a missing 4-year-old boy is asking for the public’s help as crews continue to search for her young son in the water off Castle Island on Monday.

Law enforcement began an intensive search of Castle Island and the surrounding ocean for Mohamed Fofana, off South Boston, Sunday night.

Massachusetts State Police, Massachusetts Environmental Police, Boston Fire, Boston Police, Boston EMS and the Coast Guard combed a wide area late into the night with no sign of the boy.

MSP told Boston 25 News that Mohamed was playing at a park on Castle Island on Boston’s South Shore with an adult family member Sunday evening. Shortly after seven in the afternoon, the relative lost sight of Mohamed. They did not find the toddler and called 911 around 7:30 p.m

Mohamed’s mother said her son was with his grandfather and sister when he went missing. He also noted that his son does not speak.

“Please help me. If anyone has Mohamed, I need him. Please help me,” the boy’s mother said in an emotional plea. “He’s autistic, he doesn’t speak. Please, please.”

Mohamed’s grandfather said the park was full of people while they were playing and they didn’t know the area.

In a statement, Boston Public Schools confirmed that Mohamed was a student in its system.

“We are deeply troubled to learn of the disappearance of one of our students, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the entire school community during this difficult time,” BPS said.

MSP patrols responded and conducted a sweep of the area. Multiple other agencies and units assisted in the search by land, air and water.

Mohamed is black and was last seen wearing a gray hoodie, blue jeans and blue shoes. Anyone who sees Mohamed or has information about him should call 911 immediately.

Police remained at the scene overnight after calling off the search around 1am on Monday.

The search resumed Monday morning with officials closing off parts of Castle Island to sweep the area with K9 dogs.
