MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — The Greater Muskegon Memorial Day committee reversed its decision to ban political figures, candidates, parties and action groups from participating in this year’s Memorial Day parade.
“The Greater Muskegon Memorial Committee had a meeting (Monday) night and discussed the issue in depth. The committee came to the conclusion that the meaning of the parade is to build patriotism and citizenship and not decision,” parade chairman Steven Allen told News 8.
The NAACP pulled out of the Muskegon Memorial Day parade after the political ban
Last week, Allen said the parade has had problems with candidates, politicians and political groups in past years. The committee felt the policy diverted attention from honoring the men and women who have served the country.
Because of the policy, the Muskegon County branch of the NAACP and the Democratic Black Caucus, which had previously participated, were told they could no longer participate.
It is unknown if they will participate this year now that the policy has been reversed.
The parade will start on Monday, May 29 at 9 am.
