The third candidate in Turkey’s presidential election, Sinan Ogan, backed front-runner Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday in a boost ahead of a scheduled runoff.
Ogan, who received 5.17 percent of the vote in the first round of the presidential election that took place on May 14, told a press conference in Ankara that he will support incumbent Erdogan, rather than his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu, in the second presidential round scheduled for May 28.
Erdogan received 49.52% of the vote in the first round, giving him a five-point lead over Kilicdaroglu.
Ogan had conditioned his support for either candidate on tough policies toward refugees and some Kurdish groups he perceives as terrorists.
In an interview with CNN last week, Ogan stated, “Our electorate is very attached to us, of course, where we need it, they will come with us.”
