An 18-year-old Cambridge teenager has been arrested in connection with a brazen daytime shooting that was caught on video in Roxbury’s Ramsay Park last week.
Marcus Battle faces numerous charges following his arrest, police said.
Chilling video captured two gunmen opening fire on each other in broad daylight near a Boston park where children were playing baseball Wednesday night. The video showed several people in the street running for cover. Several parked cars were visibly riddled with bullets.
Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox denounced gun violence in announcing the teenager’s arrest Tuesday afternoon.
“Several cars were damaged in the area that night, it certainly shook up a lot of the neighbors and residents that live in that community,” Cox told reporters during a news conference.
Cox had a strong message for shooters who promote gun violence on city streets.
“They have no regard for human life,” Cox said. “The volume of guns out there is out of control and you add younger people into the mix and that makes it more dangerous.”
Another gunman is still at large, officials said.
Officers responding to reports of more than 20 shots fired in the area of Shawmut and Mass avenues shortly after 6:45 p.m. taped off a perimeter of the park beyond the businesses.
Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden on Tuesday asked the public for help in catching the perpetrators of gun violence.
“In this case and in all cases, we always need the help and assistance of the public in providing information about these incidents. We’re glad we were able to make the arrest,” Hayden said.
Cox said citizens need to contact police to help stop the violence.
“If they see something, they need to say something, so (police officers) can show up before things get heated,” Cox said.
The motive for the Ramsay Park shooting remains under investigation, he said.
