BBB adds the following tips to help ensure an enjoyable vacation:
Plan ahead. Allow enough time to research hotels, flights and your area of stay. Usually, the earlier you book, the better the deals and the lower the risk of the destination being booked solid. Booking in advance also locks in rates and avoids higher prices later in the summer.
Avoid broad internet searches. Entering phrases like “best deals” into any search engine you use can sometimes bring up websites that look official but are designed solely to scam people.
Be alert to travel scams. Beware of phone calls or letters claiming a “free ride” or websites offering prices that seem too good to be true.
Do your homework. Ask family and friends to recommend a travel agency or website and visit it BBB.org Free business profiles. Research the company and read customer reviews of any rental you are considering.
Get the travel details in writing. Before making the final payment, get all the details of the trip in writing. This should include the total cost, restrictions, cancellation penalties and airline and hotel names. Also, review and keep a copy of the cancellation and refund policies of the airline and hotel, as well as the cancellation policies of the travel agency or booking site used.
Consider travel insurance. Travel insurance covers things like trip cancellations or medical emergencies. There are different levels of coverage depending on the type of plan purchased. Ask lots of questions and always read the fine print to see what is and isn’t covered.
Pay by credit card. Paying by credit card offers extra protection if something goes wrong with your travel booking.
Wait to post on social media. It’s fun to post adventures with friends and family, but wait until you get back from your trip. Photos and social media posts of the family having a good time also let burglars know the house is empty.
Check the weather conditions where you will travel and pack the right supplies and clothing.
Avoid traveling alone. Use the buddy system and stick with the group.
Use a hotel safe to store extra cash and keep valuables under lock and key
