NO LEGAL ADVICE: Recruitment should not be political

North Idaho College trustees will appoint new legal representation for the school. The KCRCC majority seems determined to hire the attorney with the least experience available. Todd Banducci shared his criteria for choosing representation: The attorney should be from Idaho and be local. Keep in mind that there are no qualifications and experience, and that the legal profession is highly specialized.

Let’s apply Banducci’s criteria to another highly specialized profession: medicine. Pretend a loved one needs delicate brain surgery. Of the surgeons available, the most experienced brain surgeon is located in Spokane. Boise has an experienced brain surgeon. There is a respected surgeon in town, but he has less experience with brains. A Sandpoint surgeon lists many surgeries but no experience with brain surgery and has only practiced for six years.

Banducci’s criteria immediately and arbitrarily exclude the best option and the second best option. The surgeon in town is ineligible due to a conflict, leaving only the less experienced surgeon to operate on your loved one.

Ironically, the most qualified and experienced surgeon is literally closer than the “local” recommended by Banducci’s criteria.

Has the majority of KCRCC provided the best care for your loved one? Will your criteria provide NIC with the best legal advice or will your friends serve?

Naming the firm with the most resources and expertise in education law sends a strong message to NWCCU that the board is committed to providing quality leadership to North Idaho College. Let’s hope they apply wisdom to their decision rather than partisan politics.
