An Alabama news reporter rushed to the scene of the “breaking news” and found her boyfriend on his knees, the video shows.
The surprise marriage proposal he left the television journalist Valerie Bell in shock
“Here I was, thinking I was going to get breaking news,” Bell, a reporter for WBMA in Birmingham, wrote July 1 on Instagram. “But little did he know, it was all part of a massive collaborative plan to pull off a very big surprise.”
A five-minute clip that Bell posted on social media begins as a vehicle pulls into a parking lot near police cars and a fire truck. Bell is seen walking out, taking a picture with his phone and talking to a police officer about a domestic violence incident near a lake.
But before Bell can take notes, the camera catches someone behind her on the knee, holding a ring box. The policeman asks him to turn around, revealing the big surprise.
“I’m just trying to process what just happened. Oh my God,” he says in the video, before being asked about the shock. “I thought there were kids in the water. This is so bad.”
Then the TV reporter’s boyfriend, Blake Bjornson, asks for her hand in marriage. Bell replies “yes” before the two share a kiss.
Later on social media, Bell thanked first responders, WBMA chief photographer Bill Castle and her now-fiancé for helping them create the special memory.
“Can’t wait to spend eternity with you,” Bell wrote on Twitter. “I’m the luckiest girl.”
So how did her fiance make engagement happen?
“Bjornson, who works as a firefighter, rallied some of his friends (including) the Pell City Police Department to help go ahead with the proposal story of a lifetime,” WBMA wrote on Facebook.
Bell did not respond to McClatchy News’ requests for comment.
