A car fire broke out late Tuesday morning, Nov. 15, in a parking lot near the southeast corner of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City campus.
According to Lincoln City Fire Inspector Brad Hasenjaeger, the fire broke out on the fourth floor of the Lincoln Academy parking lot, prompting a call to Lincoln Fire and Rescue at approximately 11:50 a.m. . The home car was totaled and heat-related damage was caused to two adjacent vehicles.
The fire broke out about a block down from the fire department’s East Center station, and firefighters were able to get to the scene before noon. By early afternoon, the authorities had the fire completely extinguished.
Although an ambulance has been spotted at the scene, no injuries have been reported.
The exact cause of the fire was unknown, although Hasenjaeger speculated a mechanical malfunction of the car, which had been parked for about half an hour before the incident.
“It had only been ridden 2 miles, it’s not like it had been ridden hard and hot,” Hasenjaeger said. “Something in the electricity didn’t shut off and kept on flailing, shorted out and started a fire.”
