Portions of Alessi Bakery, the century-old Tampa staple, went up in flames Monday night after an outside cooler caught fire, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.
Firefighters responded to the bakery at 2909 W Cypress St. around 20:50. When firefighters arrived, they found the fire originating in the back, exterior of the refrigerator and freezer area of the establishment.
Firefighters brought the flames under control within 25 minutes and prevented the fire from spreading to the main part of the building, the agency said.
At the time of the fire, no one was in the bakery and there were no injuries, said the Fire Department. The Tampa Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
Alessi’s Bakery was founded in 1912 on Cherry Street by Nicolo Alessi after arriving in Tampa from Italy. The bakery moved, first to Howard Avenue, and now to its Cypress Street location.
The bakery was closed Tuesday morning, according to two people who answered calls to a phone number listed for the business.
