BOSTON – Boston’s Ted Williams Tunnel was closed to traffic to allow for an organ transplant during the height of the Thursday morning commute, officials said.

The tunnel was closed to traffic at 8:15 a.m. to accommodate transportation, MassDOT announced at 8 a.m. as commuters took to city and surrounding roads.

“Drivers on I-90 in Boston in the tunnel area may experience brief delays,” MassDOT said in a statement.

The tunnel reopened to traffic shortly after 8:15 a.m., but residual traffic was backed up for miles.

The Ted Williams Tunnel and Tobin Bridge have been serving as alternate travel routes for drivers since the Sumner Tunnel closed earlier this month.

No additional details were immediately available.
