BOSTON – A 16-year-old girl from Revere was arraigned in Boston Juvenile Court on charges in connection with a brutal attack on a woman riding a Silver Line bus to Nubian Square on July 2, the prosecutor said of District Kevin Hayden.
The youth was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, shoeing and unarmed robbery. Judge Peter Coyne on Tuesday revoked the girl’s bond for 60 days in the pending assault case and set bail at $300 in the new case, along with orders to stay away from the victim and to away from all MBTA properties, Hayden said.
The girl was one of eight apparent youths involved in the attack, Hayden said, adding that investigators are confident they will identify other perpetrators in connection with the assault.
Around 11:13 p.m. on July 2, the victim, a 35-year-old woman, was seen on video entering a Silver Line car bound for Plaza Nubia and standing near the door of back, Hayden said. Minutes later, a young man was seen walking up to the victim and throwing what appeared to be potato chips at his head. The victim was seen turning to see who threw the chips, then turned away in an apparent attempt to ignore the juveniles.
Another youth was then seen squeezing a bottle of lotion over the victim’s hair, face and body. The victim moved towards the young man in an apparent attempt to prevent him from giving more lotion. At that moment, another juvenile pushed the victim to the ground, and the rest of the juveniles, boys and girls, joined in the attack, punching and kicking the victim while she was already lying on the ground in a self protection
Young Revere, who was not identified because she was a juvenile, was caught on video striking the victim in the head with a closed fist about seven times, Hayden said. He was also seen kicking the victim in the head and face about three times.
During the attack, some of the juveniles were seen opening and rummaging through the victim’s handbag. One of the juveniles took the victim’s phone and put it in his pocket.
All the minors left the bus after arriving at the Nubia station. The victim suffered a bloody nose and other facial bruising, but did not require hospitalization.
MBTA police identified the Revere teenager through video surveillance footage and are trying to identify the other juveniles involved in the attack. Surveillance shows the group was at the AMC South Bay Center movie theater complex before boarding the Silver Line car. Theater staff that evening had reported a large group of juveniles causing several disturbances.
“This was a brutal and shocking attack on a female MBTA passenger, completely unprovoked, and an intolerable assault on the safety and security of our transit system,” Hayden said in a statement Sunday. “While our goal is to provide young offenders with options and services so that their early mistakes do not disrupt their future lives, our primary responsibility is to protect the public and ensure justice for victims. I am grateful for the work of the traffic police to identify this accused and I am sure they will make more identifications of those involved in this horrific assault.”
