SHERBORN, Mass. – The college to which a local lacrosse star had committed is “heartbroken” by last weekend’s deadly Cape Cod boating accident.
Sadie Mauro, a senior at Dover-Sherborn High School, was one of six passengers aboard a boat that struck a Cold Storage Beach pier around 9 p.m. Friday night. Dive teams recovered Sadie’s body hours later.
Mauro was an outstanding lacrosse player and committed to play lacrosse at Gettysburg College in 2024.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Sadie Mauro, who verbally committed to attend and play lacrosse at Gettysburg College in 2024,” said Gettysburg women’s lacrosse coach Charlotte Cunningham.
Cunningham says Mauro was an exceptional student, athlete and person that the university was thrilled to have join its program.
“This has been an unimaginable loss, and our team and the Gettysburg community keep Sadie’s family and friends in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of a daughter, sister, teammate and friend,” Cunningham added.
Mauro joined the Mass Elite Lacrosse team club about 5 years ago.
“He never took himself too seriously, he had a great sense of humor. It always changed something from a negative to a positive,” said Leslie Frank, one of Mauro’s lacrosse coaches at Mass Elite Lacrosse.
Dover-Sherborn school leaders will have a crisis response team with grief counselors available Monday in the high school library from 10 a.m. to noon for anyone who needs that extra support during this difficult time.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
