Donald Trump has requested a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland in the clearest sign yet that an indictment could be on the horizon following the criminal investigation into the former president’s handling of classified documents.
In a letter published to Truth Social, Trump’s lawyers claimed he had been “unfairly treated” and the victim of “continuing injustice” by special counsel Jack Smith, who is leading the investigation into the fund of documents found in Mar-a. -Lago after Trump left office.
It is common for defense attorneys to seek meetings with the Justice Department when there are potential indictments, but it is unusual to seek a meeting with the AG himself.
The letter was sent the same day Mr Trump appeared in court via video for a second hearing in his criminal case on Tuesday.
The former president was on screen in Manhattan Criminal Court for Judge Juan Merchan to make sure he understood the terms of the protective order in the case.
Judge Merchan also set a trial date for March 25, 2024, in the middle of the Republican primaries. Mr Trump looked visibly upset by this, throwing his arms in the air.

Trump supporters mock DeSantis’ site for featuring ‘swamp creature’
Donald Trump supporters have mocked Ron DeSantis for having a picture of an alligator on his soon-to-be-launched campaign website, what they’re calling a literal “swamp creature.”
While the logo is obviously a reference to Florida, fans of the former president were quick to link it to Trump’s promise to “drain the swamp” that is Washington, DC.
Far-right activist Laura Loomer tweeted: “So he’s admitting he’s a swamp creature? I got it.”
“I’m shocked at how crap @GovRonDeSantis political instincts are… When he loses the primary, I’ll eat a fried alligator to celebrate,” he added.
Trump 2024 campaign figurehead Chris LaCivita had a succinct response to the image about how he thought the Florida governor would fare against the former president:

The latest polls show Trump far ahead, but Republican voters are open to other candidates
The latest CNN poll shows that while Donald Trump is the first choice of 53% of GOP and Republican-leaning voters in the upcoming 2024 primaries, double Ron DeSantis’ 26%, it also found that the same voters are open to either candidates and others. .
More than 8 in 10 support or say they are open to considering Trump (84%) and DeSantis (85%), and smaller majorities say they support or would consider former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley (61 %). [Tim] Scott (60%) and former Vice President Mike Pence (54%). Haley and Pence are currently the top choice at 6 percent, according to the poll, with Scott at 2 percent along with former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and five other candidates with 1 percent support or less.
The survey (see full results here) also found that several names thought to be considering joining the race for the nomination may be thinking twice…
The survey also finds that most of the potential electorate has already ruled out some names in the primaries. Sixty percent say they would not support Christie for the nomination under any circumstances, and 55% say they would never support former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson or New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, respectively.
