Americans Want Congressional Term Limits 80% Regardless of Political Affiliation Support Congressional Term Limits!
This is Holly Robichaud for breaking news by deadline in the US. The push for term limits, the Oklahoma State Senate passed our congressional term limits resolution. Oklahoma joins the other states of Florida, Alabama, Missouri, West Virginia and Wisconsin that have approved USTL requests specific to single-issue congressional term limits.
The momentum continued with resolution HJR11 in the US House of Representatives sponsored by SC Ralph Norman. Visit termlimits.com/mccarthy to sign our petition to urge Speaker McCarthy to bring up House Joint Resolution 11 for a vote. We continue to have new co-signatories, we are already almost 100 bipartisan co-signatories!
We’re giving special thanks to first-term Democratic Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez for co-sponsoring House Joint Resolution 11 with a billboard in her district.
There is also momentum in the US Senate, Texas Senator Ted Cruz has sponsored, as we mentioned before, Senate Joint Resolution 2, a companion bill to House Joint Resolution 11.
Last week, we reported that 538 had a story that said today’s Congress is older than ever, with the average age of a senator at 64. In a follow-up to this story, California Sen. Diane Feinstein, 89, has been out of the Senate for more than a month due to health issues. Senator Feinstein was first elected in 1992 and has two years left on her term. Mainstream outlets like Politico are reporting that he may never return to the Senate, but that he will not resign and will remain in office. This story demonstrates the need for term limits.
Republican presidential candidates Nikki Haley and Vivek Ganapathy Ramaswamy support congressional term limits. Term Limits USA calls on FOX News Channel, which will conduct the first Republican presidential debate to ask each candidate whether they support them and promote the passage of an amendment to congressional term limits if elected. We also ask the same of every declared presidential candidate.
The corrupt politician of the week. New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez, who served in the US House from 1993 to 2006 and has been in the Senate since 2007, is no friend of congressional term limits. The New York Times has described him as the head politician of New Jersey’s Hudson County and also a believer in politics as usual.
In 2006 he was investigated for possible illegal rental activities. Although he was not charged, this was his first scandal. In 2013, Obama’s Justice Department charged him with bribery, fraud and making false statements. A trial resulted in a mistrial, and in 2018 the Justice Department dropped the charges because of what they called a legal loophole. The Senate Ethics Committee admonished him. And now in 2022 Biden’s Justice Department has opened a new criminal investigation into him regarding alleged payments.
