The Ukrainian military has claimed to have recaptured its first village since launching a counter-offensive against Russia.
Ukrainian soldiers were filmed raising their blue and yellow flag at a damaged building in what the military said was the village of Blahodatne in the partially occupied eastern Donetsk region in the country’s southeast.
The unverified video was released by the Armed Forces’ 68th Separate Fighter Brigade.
It comes after President Volodymyr Zelensky said defensive and counter-offensive actions against Russian forces are underway in an apparent confirmation of Putin’s expected troop pullback.
The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) has insisted that it repels Ukrainian attacks in the Donetsk region.

The UN nuclear watchdog is concerned about water levels at the Ukrainian power plant
The UN’s atomic watchdog said it needs wider access around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant to check “a significant discrepancy” in water level data at the broken Kakhovka dam used to cool reactors at the floor.
Measurements received by the agency from the plant’s inlet showed that the dam’s water levels remained stable for about a day over the weekend, the head of the International Water Agency said. Atomic Energy, Rafael Grossi.
He is scheduled to visit the nuclear power plant this week.
“However, it is reported that the height continues to drop elsewhere in the huge reservoir, resulting in a possible difference of about two meters,” Grossi said in a statement.
“Water level height is a key parameter for the continued operability of water pumps.”
“It is possible that this discrepancy in measured levels is caused by an isolated body of water separated from the larger body of the reservoir,” he said in the statement. “But we will only be able to know when we access the thermal power plant.”
Water from the tank is used to cool the facility’s six reactors and spent fuel storage, the IAEA said.
The top official said the thermal plant “plays a key role in the safety and security of the nuclear plant just a few kilometers away”, hence the need for independent access and assessment.
