WASHINGTON (AP) — Disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar, who was convicted of sexually abusing female gymnasts, was stabbed multiple times during an altercation with another inmate at a Florida federal prison.
Two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press that the attack took place Sunday at the Coleman United States Penitentiary in Florida. People said he was in stable condition Monday.
One of the people said she had been stabbed in the back and chest.
The people were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the attack or the ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Nassar was sentenced to decades in prison for sexually assaulting gymnasts, including Olympic medalists.
Nassar is serving decades in prison for convictions in state and federal courts. He admitted to sexually assaulting athletes when he worked at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians. Separately, Nassar pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.
During victim impact statements in 2018, several athletes testified that throughout Nassar’s more than two decades of sexual abuse, they had told adults what was going on, including coaches and athletic trainers, but that he didn’t go away. denounce
More than 100 women, including Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, have collectively sought more than $1 billion from the federal government over the FBI’s failure to stop Nassar when agents learned of the allegations against him on 2015. The state of Michigan, which was accused of missing opportunities for years to stop Nassar, agreed to pay $500 million to more than 300 women and girls who were assaulted by him. USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee struck a $380 million deal.
The Michigan Supreme Court last month rejected a final appeal by Nassar. Nassar’s lawyers said in 2018 he was treated unfairly and deserved a new hearing, citing vindictive comments by a judge who called him a “monster” who would “wither away” in prison like a witch “The Wizard of Oz” villain.
“I just signed your death warrant,” Ingham County Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said of Nassar’s 40-year sentence.
The state Supreme Court said Nassar’s appeal was a “close issue” and had “concerns” about the judge’s conduct. But the court also noted that Aquilina, despite his provocative comments, stood by the plea agreement drawn up by the lawyers in the case.
“We decline to expend additional judicial resources and further subject the victims in this case to additional trauma where the questions at issue represent no more than an academic exercise,” the court said in a two-page order.
More than 150 victims spoke or gave statements during a seven-day special hearing in Aquilina court more than four years ago.
“It’s over. … Almost six years after filing the police report, it’s finally over,” said Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to publicly accuse Nassar.
