Thousands without power in Chandler as temperatures hit 119 again

Thousands of people in Chandler were without power Thursday. As of 4 p.m., the outage affected more than 2,000 Arizona Public Service Co. customers. At the beginning of the day, more than 5,000 customers were affected.

As of Thursday evening, less than 150 customers were affected near Ray Road to Commonwealth Avenue and Arizona Avenue to Kingston Street. According to the APS, the outage was caused by faulty equipment.

The power outage hit Chandler as temperatures soared to 119 degrees Thursday afternoon for the second day in a row. The outage was located around Chandler Boulevard and Arizona Avenue, according to the APS outage map.

According to the map, power was expected to return around 5pm on Thursday. Temperatures were expected to remain above 115 degrees until at least 6 p.m.

The Chandler Police Department also responded as several intersections in the area were affected by the outage, prompting officers to control traffic at the intersections.

APS and the Salt River Project recently set new summer electricity demand records, with SRP seeing demand peak Tuesday at 8,163 megawatts.

APS saw its increase on July 15, with demand rising to 8,191 megawatts.
